In order for children to develop their own language (as well as a second language that they might be learning), there are many strategies that parents can use in order to support their children who are always learning how to express themselves, to hear and understand language, and to become competent communicators. Here are a few different strategies to try:
Talk Often with Your Child
Not only will your child get much needed practice by communicating with you but your child will also be exposed to the vocabulary that you use in your conversations.
Books, CDs, DVDs
Read to your child. Read every chance you can get. Read in English (and read in your native language if it is not English). Don't have time to read? Record yourself reading so that your child can follow along when he or she wants to read.
Listen to music. Music is a great fun way to expose students to language.
Watch movies and TV shows. Watching age appropriate movies and television programs will help students make connections with what they see to the language that they are hearing.
Ask Questions/Don't Correct
Encourage your child to ask questions every time he or she hears something that she does not understand. Be willing to answer these questions. When you hear your child speak do not instantly correct them if they make a mistake speaking. They are learning and learning is a delicate process. You do not want to intimidate/scare them from speaking because they are worried they might make a mistake.
